Padel Americano tournament: how it works

In an Americano tournament partners change every round and the standings are individual: each player accumulates the points from the matches they play, and whoever scores the most wins.

How to run one

  1. Pick the players: with a multiple of 4 everyone plays every round; with any other number some players rest in turn.
  2. Decide the match format before starting (for example a fixed number of points or a fixed time) and tell everyone.
  3. Each round players pair up on a rotation and the pairs face each other on the available courts.
  4. After each match everyone adds the points scored by their pair; the standings are individual.

Example: 8 players, 2 courts, 7 rounds

With 8 players (A–H) a circle rotation gives every player every other player as a partner exactly once over 7 rounds. A valid schedule:

RoundCourt 1Court 2
1A+H vs B+GC+F vs D+E
2A+G vs H+FB+E vs C+D
3A+F vs G+EH+D vs B+C
4A+E vs F+DG+C vs H+B
5A+D vs E+CF+B vs G+H
6A+C vs D+BE+H vs F+G
7A+B vs C+HD+G vs E+F

Americano vs Mexicano

In Mexicano, later pairings depend on the current standings, so players of a similar level face each other. In Americano the rotation is set from the start and does not depend on results.
